final review guide for algebra I

This final is 15% of your total grade.   It will be made up of 2 parts:  multiple choice and free response.

There should be 9-10 MC and around 9 free response.  Not that many problems for the time given but each will require thought and preparation.  Most of the test is focused on the work we did in linear functions/ SOEs, which was a unit that many of you did not prepare for.  Hope you do better this time.

Concepts
2 - solving a linear equation (but it is also part of SOEs)
1 - calculating slope (but this is also part of writing a linear equation)
1 - identifying slope (pos, neg, zero, undefined)
1- writing the equation for a line (but this is also part of writing a SOE)
1- knowing parallel lines have the same slope
4- solving a system of equations
1- writing a SOE with no solutions
1- writing a system from the solution
1 - graphing a scatterplot
1- writing the equation for a line of best fit
1 SOE application
1 "RACE/ /Demitri vs. Yakov" problem
1 - tabling a quadratic equation

We will have problems to do in class but here are some you can do as well.
p. 257 #3a
p. 330 #1ab
p. 361 #8
p. 366 #1
p. 378 #1, 4a
p. 381 #14a

pre calc final guide

The final is about 10 Mc and 7 free response.  The MC are 4 pts for right answers, 2 pts for wrongs.  The free responses are the typical 6 points.  The total would then be 102 points which would serve as 20% of your total grade.

Polynomials, including rational functions, are the major part of the test.(that includes factoring)

4 - finding zeros of a polynomial
2 - writing a polynomial function from a graph or description (including multiplicity)
2- knowing the parts of a rational function (asymptotes, zeros, holes)
1- factoring a polynomial (though factoring will help you with a few other problems)
1- composite function
1- writing a conic equation from description or graph (not a hyperbola)
1 - using a conic equation to determine an ordered pair on the conic (not a hyperbola)
1- log property (though knowing log props will help in another problem)
1 - solving log equation (beware unreasonable answers!)
1- the box problem
1 - knowing the parts of an exponential function (asymptote, key point, general shape of growth vs. decay)
1- writing the equation for a line (may include point-slope)

alg I -   We started with a skateboard task on SOEs, then took notes on elimination method.  Hw was p. 390 #1 all.

alg I SOE review guide

This is the review guide for the system of equations/ linear function test that is on Friday 12/14.

This is the test breakdown

4 solving a system (anyway you want)
1 solving a system by graphing (no algebra, but find the intersection point)
2 system applications (real world problems)
1 writing a system based on the solution
1 writing an equation from a data set

Two of these system problems can be solved by just reading the equations.  In other words, you will be able to see that they have the same slope and there won't be a solution or that it is in point-slope and they share the same point, which of course is the solution.

Good problems in book to do to prepare
p. 361 #8
p. 366 #1
p. 373 #11abefg
p. 378 #1, 3, 4abcde, 6
p. 384 #1a
p. 390 #1abd

Review guide for the test on Tuesday is on a previous blog.  Might want to start working on the pre test

alg I -   Reviewed the task from Monday; did warm up 9 on graphing using tables;  p. 257 #3,4  finish for hw

update !! review guide pre calc polynomials

Uh, oh!   I am seeing a lot of special schedules in the next week.  I don't think we are going to be able to do the last part of the unit before the test, so there will be no rational functions (2.6, 2.7) on this test.  I believe that would be #8 on the pre test.  We will instead do more modeling 2.8 and keep #7 on the pre test on the test.

Test next Tuesday.  There should be about 10 problems.  The good news is that you should have about 60 minutes to complete it.

The pre test is a great place to start.  With the exception of #6  and 8,  I think the rest will be on the test/.  Obviously, not the same problems but the same ideas

4  Solving a polynomial function (many different types) - including finding irrational and imaginary zeros

1-2    Simplifying a rational expression

1-2  Writing a polynomials function from info (it's zeros, end behavior and y-int).

1   evaluating a polynomial function with a complex number

There may be a modeling problem from 2.8; we still need to look at this so we'll see.

In addition to these problems, we have our spiral problems from the first unit:
these 2 will be on writing the equation to a line and intervals of increasing/ decreasing.

book starting on p.  170

Hi parents,

Here is a video that I showed your child on how to do math.

In addition to this, I would recommend walking the razor's edge of parenting; not hovering but still involved to a certain degree.  It could be the last opportunity for them to figure things out on their own before being thrown into the real world (or college).

alg I Quadratics review guide

The quadratics test will have 10 problems on it.  They are:

4 solving quadratic equations
1 solving a system that has a quadratic equation in it
1 writing an equation from solutions
1 application involving a rocket's path
1 graphing a quadratic equation
1 writing an equation from a list of ordered pairs
1 short answer on how to solve a quadratic equation

I can't overstate how much you should learn those problems from the last 2 quizzes (which were essentially the same quiz twice).   make sure you can do every problem on them well.

Outside of the quiz, you can work on these problems

1.  graph the quadratic function:  y = x^2 - 12x + 20
2.  what are the solutions to the graph in problem #1
3.  find the highest point on graph of the function, y = -6x^2 + 24x -3
4.  Write the equation to a quadratic function that has solutions, x = 3, -5
5. Write a rule for the sequence (4, 6, 10, 16...).  What is the 15th term?

alg II hp -  p 370 #21-24 to start, whiteboards on transforming the rational function parent function, notes on more complex rational functions.  We started to graph 5 problems that involved looking for asymptotes, zeros and holes.

alg II -  reviewed solving trig equations and took our quiz on the same material.  Billy's back!  No hw.

alg I -  We compared graphing and factoring.  We also did another right triangle problem that used integer and irrational numbers.  Work due tomorrow.

Wednesday 5/9

alg II hp -  Did a lot of review of the year on whiteboards (graphs of logs, exponentials, ellipses;  solving a polynomial; summation notation; finding a term in a geometric sequence); notes on limits and graphing rational functions.  Hw is p. 370 #3, 8, 12 and 16 (I may be wrong about the last 2 but it is the same type of problem).

alg II - Started with the jellyfish swimming in a circle problem and then took notes on graphing sine and cosine functions.  Hw is #13-15 p. 491

alg I -   We had a do-now on simplifying rational expressions (fractions) followed by whiteboards on graphing linear and quadratic functions. Finished with the task on the rocket and its height.

Tuesday 5/8

alg II hp -  Unit test   where were you Gracie???

alg II -  I hope Justin came today because we had a Kahoot!  We also reviewed the walkabout problems and took notes on 9.4 graphing a sinusoid,.  hw is p. 491  #5-12

ag I -   We reviewed the hw from Monday and did another quad sequence.  No hw but sequence due on Friday.

monday 5/7

alg II hp -    we looked at some problems on the review guide and worked on sinusoids.  Study as the test is tomorrow.

alg II  - we did #48 in section 9.3; walkabout problems on solving trig equations and finding all solutions.  9-4 notes  kahoot if there is time.

alg I -   finding solutions from graphs and determing the y-value at all solutions.  relay     5 quadratics solve by factoring.

Friday 5/4

alg II hp - some really great practice problems today in class- answers are on the blue magnet hook on the board;  test on Tuesday.

alg II -   More unit circle practice on both paper and whiteboards, including solving trig equations.

alg I - More quadratic graphing, a community circle on commitment; relay on polynomials and quadratics.,
