Winter Break News.

Congrats to all for completing a semester.  I think the majority of students gave great effort and earned top grades.  Special kudos to those students who raised their grades during finals week; not easy.

Alg II _ We will be doing units 8-1 through 8-5 when we return with quizzes scheduled for 1/10 and 1/16 and the unit test on 1/24.  We'll see about the POUs and performance task later.

Alg I  - Think about how to improve your grades.  For many it is completing and turning in hw in a times fashion, while for others it is about improving test scores or increasing participation.

pre calc - We will start ch 7 in January which focuses on trigonometry functions and the unit circle.

Thanks again for being terrific students and see you in 2014.

Parents, Check this Out!

Please go to the online textbook and check out the parent letter.

If your child is in Alg I or Alg II, I can send you a parent letter via email that details what the current unit looks like (Sorry, Pre calc!).  It can give you information that you can discuss with your child and you can ascertain how well your child is digesting the material.  Showing an interest in what they are learning also helps to show the importance of math.

I would have attached it but I don't see a document attachment for this blog.

my email is tparker@smmusd.org

Welcome to Fall!

Alg II H - we will do more quadratics tomorrow in the textbook and we are also scheduled to get the explorations book as well.  We will most likely do the performance tasks for this unit.  No hw but you should still look over your notes from today.

Alg I - Everyone really needs to look over their 4-3 notes on graphing functions.    The test is now Friday so we can review more tomorrow.  The performance tasks showed people are still not clear on how to work with functions.  Review old handouts and notes,

Pre Calc - p. 61  #13,  19, 21-23.  Tomorrow we start graphing these polynomial functions.  Perhaps DJ Papas Fritaz will rock some jams for us while we grind it out.

Tuesday, September 17, 2013

Still no Jury Duty!!!

Alg II - I will be grading those tests until Friday most likely; if you missed the test, be prepared to make it up upon return.  POUs were mostly turned in but there are still a few more out there - get them in!

Alg I - 1-15 from the textbook in chapter 4-5.  See you notes to help you with the problems.  Performance task tomorrow!!   Nice work to the peeps who played Tiger Martian Salesman.

Pre Calc - p. 61- #3-9   More synthetic division tomorrow.

Enjoy your late starts!

Monday, September 16, 2013

No Jury duty yet!

I will be in tomorrow!

Alg II -  really study both parent function transformations and piecewise functions.  Many recent warm ups have pwfunctions and the handout that had you putting words into equations, equations into words, graphs into equations will also be a big help.
POUs due tomorrow, too.

ALg I - If you did not turn in hw packet 3 today, that should be a big priority.  Many of you made big improvements in hw completion and your grade is going up.  Others need to make this move to see better grades.

Pre calc -  congrats on such good test scores.  Unit 2 here we go!

Whether I am out for 1 day or 1 month, the math courses continue!  So be very responsible if I have to leave to do my civic duty.

Friday, September 13, 2013

9/13 weekend

Happy Holidays to all that are observing Rosh Hashana.  I hope to be in on Monday but jury duty is possible!   I will be in to pick up work after school.

Alg II h - Test Tuesday.  The warm up is very helpful for Monday.  It is already on the board in case a sub comes for me.  Help each other on the transformation handout if there are questions.  Practice old warm ups and feel free to use the whiteboards.
POU is also due on Tuesday.

Alg I -  You have the handout for Monday.  Work on that in case there is a sub.  Check out graphingstories.com for some cool videos that will help with this unit.

pre calc -  No hw.  You had your test and all of you worked very hard.

I am totally knackered after seeing Jimmy Cliff last night at the Pier.  Let's all catch up on the sleep and have some fun doing something this weekend. next week could be busy!

Wednesday, September 11, 2013

9/11 -9/13

I will be out on Thursday due to a training but the show must go on without me so do your best with the sub.  There is also a chance that I will have jury duty next week so there could be several subs coming in the near future.  Let's all send out good vibes that I will be released from that duty.

Alg II h- You were given the handout today on ID transformations.  That handout will be turned in at the end of class on Thursday.  Period 1, I also forgot to collect the piecewise/ transform. handout.  You will also give that to the sub at the end of class.
All students will take the POU from the sub and work on that if you complete the ID handout and this will be turned in on tuesday - which is the day of the test.  On Friday, we will start to look at the hardest  problems from the unit and Monday we will review for the test.
Test:  heavy of function transformation, a couple piecewise functions, domain and range

Alg I - You will do more work in partners on Friday.  Tonight, you should finish up to 3D on the handout that you worked on today in class.  Quiz tomorrow as well.  Only 4-5 problems and very similar to the warmups.

pre calc - study your review sheet.  With luck, I can stop in around 3 pm and answer any questions.  Test on Friday:  2-3 imaginary number problems, 3-4 solving quadratics, 1 writing quadratics from points, 1-2 parallel/ perp. slope with midpoint, 1 graph quadratic

Any students who will be celebrating the holiday this weekend and feels overloaded please talk to me and your other teachers about being flexible and open to alternatives.
See you soon.

Monday, September 9, 2013

9/9/13

Sorry for the late post.   I didn't get home until 6 pm and it was family time until right now 8:15 pm.

Alg II h - Handout on piecewise functions.  The problems were different for periods one and two but essentially it was 3 of the graphing problems and 2-3 of the writing equations problems.
Do not leave any blanks but make your very best effort!

Alg I -  pg. 23 in your workbook.  same type of problems that we have been working on in class for 2 days.  Try each problem to the best of your ability.

pre calc -  Short time this week so start preparing now for the test on Friday
quadratic solutions, quad graphs, simplifying imaginary numbers, solving systems, working with linear equations that are parallel or perp to another line.

I think I posted a web link to a pretty good transformations video for Alg II; check it out if you have time.
Alg I can check videos on the online textbook.
Pre calc look at problems from the quiz last week.

Enjoy something tomorrow that is not school related as well!

transformations video for alg II h

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcnN5SFXZhU

Here is a pretty good video on transformations that should match our unit notes pretty well.

don't forget that the online textbook has a graphing calculator for you to use under resources!

Friday, September 6, 2013

9/6 weekend

alg II h - p. 666 #1-6 text   the class does not seem to know the parent functions very well if today's game of function celebrity is an indication.  I would start REALLY studying and memorizing the parent functions and what transformations look like.  Next week will be very challenging.  Test on Thursday has now been moved to Tuesday 9/17.

Also, check out the online textbook to use a really good graphing calculator under resources.

alg I - p. 209 #3-12, 24 in text
quiz on Thursday  and we will turn in on Monday all hw from this week!

pre calc  finish 1-10 on pge 35 in text   written exercises always

Look of starts and stops this year, but we will not have another day off of school until November so I anticipate we will find our groove in the next week or so.  In the meanwhile, study and reflect what we have been workin on in class.
A la Lunes.

l'chaim (I think that's spelled right)

Enjoy the holidays and have fun either way!

Alg II -  p. 70 2-9, 47-49, 32-37   some of you looked very at home with your function aerobics
If you don't have a graphing calculator, don't forget about meta-calculator.com.  For those with DIM errors, I found this online:  http://www.fixya.com/support/t131073-invalid_dim.

For 32-37, think about if you can have negative area, volume, distance, etc.  That could affect your domain and range.

alg I -  no hw just make sure you are caught up on the handouts and book work

pre calc - p. 28 1-6

8/30-9/2 Labor Day!

We made it through a hot day and now we have 3 days off before a 3 day week.  Happy Holidays to those who are celebrating.  Relax to all and finish what you need to.

Alg II H - hw is p. 63 text #8-13, 30, 32, 53ab, 54; if you missed Friday, grab the notes when you get back

Alg I - I will collect the hw packet on tuesday; rain graph, function factory, p. 203 1-9

pre calc -  early quiz results look promising; 2nd half of ch 1 is more challenging and filled with quadratics and complex numbers.  Still, classroom effort has been stellar and I am very impressed with your ability to balance fun and the work.
I'm out-  off to look at waves and chase my daughter!
