alg II P Review Guide for Unit 1 test on Tuesday

1.  Make sure you can graph an equation based on its parent function and transformations:

ex. 1  y = -(x+2)^3 -7  is a cubic function that has 3 transformations with its major turning point at
(-2, -7)

2.  Be able to identify transformations by name.  In the example above, I would say:  vertical reflection, horizontal shift of 2 to the left, vertical shift down 7.

3.  Be able to write domain and range of a function in interval notation.

ex. 2   for the equation in ex. 1, I would say that all values can be used for x so domain would be
(-infinity, infinity).  However, the graph is a negative parabola and it cannot go higher than -7, so its range would be (-infinity, -7)  except it would be a hard bracket next to the -7 ( I can't find that symbol in this application).

4.  Be able to graph a piecewise function from an equation.

ex.  3   y= x+4 when x<3 and  y = x^2+5 when x >3

5.  Be able to go in reverse of the above.  Look at a graph of a piecewise function and be able to write the equation including the intervals for each piece.
