wednesday 12/9
In case you haven't figured it out yet, it is all about studying from here on out. Unit exits on Thursday and then your finals next week.
Look at the review guides!!

Tuesday 12/8
alg II Hp - Monday looked really good but today looked really rocky. We may need to vote on whether to push the quiz until Friday, which would leave 1 day to review for finals.
alg I p - keep studying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! see review guide post earlier this week.

monday 12/4
alg II Hp - I would try to get some studying if you are not too overloaded. The review guide is up and from my observations it looks like most can graph from equation, some have trouble going from graph to equation and most are having difficulties putting into standard form (10-6). On another note, most look good on the conic systems.
alg i p - study for this unit test as it will be the most challenging and the most on the final. The review is a post or two before this one.
alg I final review guide
Your final will be 2 parts: 1 MC and 1 free response. There are 10 MC and 7 free reponse. It counts as 15% of your total grade.
Most of it is from the last unit, though there is one 1-variable equation for you to solve and one "age" problem (both from unit 2).
The concepts are as follows:
writing a linear equation based on information - 3
finding a solution to a system - 6
verifying a point is on a graph - 2
understanding the slopes of parallel lines - 1
collinearity - 1 (see pg. 344)
scatterplot - 1 (see pg. 409-410)
line of best fit - 1
linear inequality - 1
Here are some problems you can work on:

There are 40 coins altogether and the
total value of the coins is $6.40. How many quarters and how many dimes
does
she have?
5. Solve each equation.
a) 12x
– 3 +
x = 23 b) – 8 = 4

+ 2 )
c) 3/4 ( 8x – 4 ) + 3 = 5
6. 1. Mr. Russell loves his chili
night. He makes 2 kinds. The first has 3 cans of beans and 2 cans of
tomatoes, which costs $10.50. The second
has 1 can of beans and 4 cans of tomatoes but costs $14.50. How much does each can of produce cost?
7 Show all solutions to: y is "less than" 2x-3
8. Write an equation for a vertical line.
9. Tell whether the ordered pair is a solution
of the given system. Show your work.
x + 3y = 6 and 4x –
5y = 7 point (3,1)
10. Write an equation in slope –
intercept form for the line that passes through ( 3, 4 ) and is
parallel to y = – 2x + 3.

Linear Function and SOE review guide
This will be your most challenging test to date so I suggest you work hard in class and ask questions when you have them.
Here is what you are expected to know:
how to write the equation for a linear function
how to solve a system of equations
how to set up a system from a word problem
how to create a graph that shows two people of different speeds racing
Here is a video on how to solve systems
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nok99JOhcjo
here is a video on how to solve the word problems
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFjCb-vhdhM
Don't forget to plug in the first variable to solve for the second when solving systems!
Knowing the slope formula helps but you can still find slope by plotting the points on a coordinate plane and then counting rise and run.
I saw on your projects that many of you were not sure how to write the equation for a vertical or horizontal line. Check out the projects on the wall to see how that is done, ask us or google how to do so.
p. 360-361
p. 366
p. 385
p. 392

A-2 HP Conics guide
I decided that we are going to need to remaining time to master the basic skills of conics so there isn't any application problems where you see the real-world context. I think that is to your advantage as you won't have to interpret; just do what the problem says to do.
There are 6 problems
1 put an equation of a conic into standard form and graph
1 stating domain and range in interval notation
1 Writing the equation of a conic from a graph
2 writing an equation for a conic from a description
1 solving a system that includes at least one conic equation
...and an extra credit!
With the exception of the system, you should have all examples of these types of problems in your packet.
The systems are in your book on page 267. Don't forget that there can be up to 4 answers or as low as none in some cases.

early final news
alg ii hp-
I have made a final but that doesn't mean it is 100% set, though I would say it is at least 80% set. I will do another post later this week with an update and then another post about the review guide.
There will be 15 problems: 4 from radicals, 4 polynomials, 2 conics, 2 quadratics and 3 from the opening chapter on parent functions and transformations.
No matter what chapter, finding solutions and determining reasonable solutions are the top skills being assessed.
alg I p -
Your final is also mostly set but I don't have the specifics yet. ALMOST ALL of your final concerns linear functions: graphing, solving , writing equations from given information and finding solutions to linear systems

alg II HP review guide
8 problems on the test, each requiring you to read the problem carefully and solve.
sketching a graph based on a description of roots, y-int and end behavior - 1
Writing equations from description of function (roots and y-int) - 2
Finding solutions to a polynomial function (involves factoring)-2
Volume for a prism or cylinder with polynomial edge lengths - 3
One of the volume problems does involve reasonable domain so make sure you know what domain means and when it is reasonable.
Knowing end behavior (pos/neg/even/odd) is important for the graph and writing equations.
One of the solving problems asks about unreasonable solutions, make sure you know how to tell if an answer is unreasonable.
There was no room for Pascal's Triangle so no need to rededicate yourself on that concept.

Hi students,
Here are the concepts on the test, most are in ch 3 but one or two are carry-overs from the last unit.
be able to:
solve a system of non linear equations
solve any quadratic (with real or imaginary solutions)
solve a word problem with initial velocity and height
solve a word problem that asks about maximum height
solve a word problem that asks how long something is in the air (if it travels parabolically)
list domain and range for a quadratic
write a quadratic equation from 2 real solutions or 1 imaginary one
Other thoughts:
Somewhere in there I will fit in some transformations of a quadratic.
I don't see graphing making it on this test but hopefully you know that well after the quiz. I suppose you could solve the system by graphing.
If you want to practice for the test, check out the sub units in chapter 3, practice problems in those units (odd answers in the back of the book) and then bring your questions in for me to answer.
I will update this if anything changes.
Some problems in book:
p. 99 any
p. 101 #62
p. 127 any
p. 128 #62, 64
p. 136 any
Look in your class work and warm ups for writing equations from solutions.

alg II Hp quiz info
As you heard, there will be a quiz this Friday on parent functions and their transformations. Also included are (to a lesser degree): domain and range and piecewise functions.
Here is a link to a video to review the main part of the quiz.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=550lkdTCnBM
Make sure you can:
1. sketch a graph from an equation- 3
2. write an equation from a description of a function - 3
3. write a piecewise function for a word problem - 1
4. identify transformations in a real world situation - 2
5. transform a point of an unknown graph using equational analysis - 1
6. Write domain and range for a function based on its equation - 2
You'll have about 35 minutes to complete this quiz
Monday 8/24/15
alg II HP - study those notes and see if you can improve your time in sketching a graph from an equation.
alg I P - finish the activity on Alien Mutations.

the next day for 75% credit or up to 2 weeks late for 50%. No homework can be turned in more
than 2 weeks late.
*** If
you are having issues, I can help you: after school, at lunch, emails.
CLASS WORK: warm ups and participation
Each day of warm ups will
have a warm up number and a date! We check these from
time to time. If you want a
good participation grade: have
your work materials out on your desk, raise your hand to answer questions, go
to the board, use the class time to work on the math practices, and don’t talk over me!
QUIZZES/ TESTS/ FINAL:
· We usually give 2-3 quizzes and a test a month. In addition to these, there will be a
final in January and in June. You
will take a performance task
with every unit. For these, you
